Alan Oakman – 1930-2018

Everyone at Warwickshire County Cricket Club is immensely saddened to learn this morning about the passing of former coach and club administrator Alan Oakman.

‘Oaky’ as he was fondly known by many, was coach of the legendary Bears team that won the County Championship in 1972 before subsequently moving into the role of Assistant Secretary for Cricket Administration.

He continued to coach, manage the senior over 40s and 50s teams and represented the Club and Warwickshire Old County Cricketers Association (WOCCA) in a number of off-field roles before retiring from all activity recently.

Prior to joining Warwickshire, Oakman enjoyed a 22-year playing career as an off-spinning all-rounder with Sussex and played two Test for England, notably the 1956 Ashes Test against Australia at Old Trafford where he took five catches off the bowling of Jim Laker who took 19 wickets in the match.

He finished his playing career in 1968 having taken 736 wickets and scored 21,800 runs in 538 First Class appearances.

The thoughts of all at Warwickshire CCC are with the family of Alan at this difficult time.
