It was a rainy start that delayed play on a day which saw the Bears slump to their fifth defeat, this time at the hands of the reigning champions, Hampshire Women.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first in the wet conditions at home, the Edgbaston Community Sports Ground, openers, Bethan Ellis (8) and Amy Jones (19), got the Bears off to a flying start before an unfortunate spell saw three wickets fall in the space of 12 balls for only three runs. Ellis and Jones were quickly followed back to the club house by the Captain Marie Kelly (0).
Hampshire were on a roll as more Warwickshire wickets fell in quick succession, thanks to some excellent bowling from Maia Bouchier (5-0-19-2) and great field work. Three wickets in the 20th over, bowled by Providence Cowdrill (5-0-19-4), restricted the Bears to 70-7 which meant Kathryn Bryce’s 26* was important in boosting the total to 109 all out for Hampshire to chase.
Despite some tight opening bowling from Issy Wong (5-1-15-0) and Liz Russell (5-1-16-0), it was Georgia Davis who gave the Bears their much needed first wicket whent Hampshire had scored 45. Bouchier (23) for Hampshire Women sent the ball high into the sky and Ria Fackrell ran in from the boundary to take the catch perfectly.
The partnership between Bouchier and Charlie Dean had given Hampshire the start they wanted but Davis struck again not long after, taking Dean (28) LBW at 59-2. However, the new batsmen Fi Morris (25 from 30) and Katie George (16*) piled on the runs, making the run chase easy.
Two boundaries in the last over pushed the away team to 111 securing their first win of the season (despite being the reigning champions), clinching it away from the Bears .
Warwickshire tried their hardest, like they have done before but, it just wasn’t enough to seal the win this time. The Bears will be hoping to fight back from their previous defeats against Surrey tomorrow, the second match of their Bank Holiday campaign for the One-Day Cup and the penultimate game of the season.
