Report: Warwickshire v Worcestershire – friendly

Warwickshire continued their 2019 preparations with a 50 over friendly against Worcestershire.

Warwickshire received their first defeat of pre-season as Worcestershire chased 404 to win by four wickets.

Following victories against Somerset and today’s visitors, the Bears were put into bat – reaching 403 for seven.

Matt Lamb led the attack, firing a superb 88 off 43 balls, which included seven fours and six sixes.

Sam Hain (70 from 84), Liam Banks (67 from 53), Tim Ambrose (61 from 55), Adam Hose (40 off 28) were the early support with Alex Mellor (32 off 12) and George Panayi (17 off six) adding extra impetus in the final overs.

Worcestershire responded and hit the 100 mark in just 12.2 overs.

Rikki Wessells, who was eventually bowled for 97 off 51 balls by Kamau Leverock, proved the key batter as the Bears removed Josh Dell (Sidebottom), Tom Fell (Sidebottom), George Rhodes (Thomson) and Brett D’Oliveira (Panayi) for less than 35 a piece, leaving Worcestershire on 210 for five after 27 overs.

But it wasn’t to be as the Bears strived for wickets. Ross Whiteley led the fightback with 68 off
41, before Alex Milton (62 off 59) and Ed Barnard (78 off 31) reached the target with 29 balls in hand.

“It was probably a good toss to win and with the small boundaries have got to accept it’s going to be a little strange,” Coach Jim Troughton said post-match.

“There will be some deliveries that go for four or six that never do in a normal game so you had to get your mindset around that and I thought both teams dealt with that very well.

“We’re not complaining. We know it’s a pre-season game and it’s not in the middle of block as we need to look after the Leeds/Bradford MCCU and Kent wickets.

“I thought we set a good platform and really dominated the last ten overs, which gave us a competitive total and we’re always going to be picky with that type of boundary by thinking ’30 extra runs could be helpful’

“We kept taking wickets, but when you’re chasing you can always use the short boundary to your advantage. You almost have to sometimes take the runs out of the occasion and figure out as bowler ‘am I hitting my areas aggressively and am I looking to take wickets?’

“I thought we learnt a lot from that chase and also with the bat so good things to take away.”
